At least thirteen individuals lose their lives and 98 injured in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's major government projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” declared the head of state.

The leader announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The building of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a significant growth of its role in public projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, defying expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled significant questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the disaster, the head of a key rival party demanded an immediate halt in the development and management of all similar projects.

This pause was suggested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."

In response, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and operation of these strategic projects.
