The Gaming Giant Hires Popular Battle Royale Producer to Rescue Challenged Hero Shooter Project Ethos
The renowned publisher has secured a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to direct the development team at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the anticipated third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Management Transition Comes After Mixed Feedback
Brinkman steps into the leadership position at the development studio following the departure of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's underwhelming early showing last fall.
Recently, 2K president David Ismailer informed team members about this decision through an internal memo, which emphasized that playtesting had revealed the necessity for a more defined vision.
Ismailer expressed that the developers is now reimagining the project with a revised approach, aiming to better meet gamer demands.
Trend of Strategic Acquisitions
This announcement follows a similar action taken by the publisher in August, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to work on the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.
Below is the complete text from the president's announcement:
Team—
I know you all just wrapped up your meeting - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the recent updates. Last time I shared you all a message, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this team. You all are some of the most dedicated and creative developers we have had the opportunity to work with - and we’re excited for that partnership to continue.”
Given your hard work and versatility, especially over the past twelve months, you repeatedly show that.
The community feedback from last fall’s Project ETHOS testing phase was informative. It confirmed the promise of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had refinements needed. It uncovered the requirement for a sharper vision.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve come. You took the feedback to mind and reimagined the title with a revitalized goal - one that’s poised to fulfill its potential to our audience.
Our confidence in Project ETHOS increases every day. To further the outstanding development you’ve made, I’m excited to announce the new hire as the latest Director of the team. Following a period of discussions, Ben officially joins us on Monday, October 20.
Ben’s management and expertise in the PVP shooter genre is considerable, having spent the last 15 years creating and leading some of the most well-known titles in gaming, for example the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, Apex Legends.
I invite you all in welcoming him next week. We are all looking forward to keep witnessing the development of Project ETHOS in the weeks to ahead.
David
Experience of the New Head
Brinkman currently holds the role of senior developer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. Brinkman earlier worked at Treyarch and Activision in diverse production roles on the Call of Duty series, and, before that, had assignments at 2K and Electronic Arts.
Title Details and Concept
The upcoming game was revealed in last year alongside a public demo. Then, 31st Union described the game as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an innovative advancement on the genre."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in real-time to match your preferred approach," the description states. "Challenge the opponents with unique powers, challenges, and challenges that shift every session. Do you safely extract with your hard-earned loot? Alternatively take a risk, put it on the line, and pray your team can achieve the highest spot? The choice is in your hands."
The game lacks an official launch window or platforms, but players can look forward to further news as creation progresses.
